TRAIN INFORMATION/CONDITIONS
All Russia train tickets require reservations in advance, and are valid only to
the person they are issued to (When ordering tickets, please specify your
nationality
and passport number to your White Nights agent along with your name). Your
ticket will
indicate the wagen number and seat of your train, along with a Russian
abbreviation
of your train station (for cities with multiple train stations).
Conductors will
usually check your ticket information against your passport before allowing you
to board and may keep your ticket, offering to return it only upon
completion of
the journey. Tickets bought through White Nights will be given to you by
the White Nights representative in Moscow.
Stopovers: you must buy separate tickets for each leg of a journey. In
other words,
if you would like to travel from Moscow to Beijing, stopping over in
Irkutsk and
Ulan Bator, Mongolia, you must buy three separate tickets, specifying your
departure
dates in advance (i.e., Moscow to Irkutsk, Irkutsk to Ulan Bator, Ulan
Bator to Beijing).
In theory, with a Moscow-Beijing ticket you may stopover in Irkutsk, and with a
notation from your conductor, your ticket could still be used to complete
travel
to Beijing if you pay a significant extra fee in Irkutsk for a reservation
on your next train. Tickets not originating in Moscow cannot be issued
more than
27 days in advance. Therefore, White Nights can not issue you tickets upon your
arrival in Moscow for departures from cities other than Moscow for dates more
than 27 days in advance. All tickets originating in Ulan Bator, Mongolia,
can only
be obtained from the White Nights representative in Ulan Bator, and tickets
originating in China must be obtained from the White Nights representative
in Beijing.
Bedding: bedding is not included in the price of tickets for sleeping
compartments.
The bedding fee of around $2-$3 must be paid directly to the conductor. On long
train journeys you may be given opportunity to receive fresh bedding only
one time
at the beginning of the trip.
Classes of travel: Second class travel (or hard-class) in long-distance
trains entitles you to a berth in a four-person compartment. It is possible
that you may have to share
your compartment with persons of the opposite sex. First class travel (or
soft-class)
entitles you to a berth in a two-person compartment, giving you more privacy.
Food: Food is generally available on long-distance trains, but may be
bland (hot dogs and bread, etc). Along the Trans-Siberian route, the
trainstops at cities may be
anywhere from 10-20 minutes, sufficient time to buy food from vendors at
train stations. Especially in trains to Central Asia, be careful about
buying perishable
food from vendors at stations.
Safety: Use common sense to prevent yourself from becoming a crime victim.
When possible keep luggage in the compartment underneath your berth.
Separate your
money in several locations (the wearing of a money pauch is recommended). Lock
your sleeping compartment at nights, although with the right tool locked
compartments can still be opened from the outside.
