Who needs a Mongolian visa? Practically everyone from a Western country.
Mongolian visas are not issued at the border! (Except, in some instances, transit visas - BUT YOU CANNOT COUNT ON THIS!).Adventurous clients of White Nights travel by train from Moscow to Beijing, going through Mongolia (a train to Beijing bypassing Mongolia is also available). A transit visa allows for you to simply ride the train through Mongolia, without any opportunity to do any sightseeing. To stop over in Ulan Bator, Mongolia's capital, a Mongolian entry visa is needed.
How to Obtain a Mongolian Visa (Please consult your Mongolian Embassy for visa fees and for current information on visa issuance)
ENTRY VISAS: Bookings must be made in advance with White Nights for every day of your stay in Mongolia. Once White Nights receives confirmation of your bookings from Ulan Bator, either a telex will be sent to your Mongolian Embassy of choosing or a special travel voucher issued for receiving a Mongolian entry visa. The Mongolian Embassy may also ask to see your onward visa for travel after Mongolia. Mongolian visa support for an entry visa costs $12.
It is possible that your Mongolian visa can be processed in a few days. At the Mongolian Embassy in Moscow, or consulate in Irkutsk, it may be possible to receive your Mongolian visa in one or two days (best to apply for visa immediately when arriving in these cities).
